Treasures Or Junk

FTLComm - Tisdale - Tuesday, June 19, 2001
With have talked about the trauma of a yard sale yesterday it was interesting to spot these items amidst the various items being positioned for an up coming auction sale.

The picture at the top of the page is a stripped down chassis of a Ford Model T. Many farms put the remains of an old vehicle to work as a wagon of some sorts and this may have been what happened to this one. Now in its present condition this bit of an old car is going to be haggled over and someone will claim it and we will all shake our heads.

The picture on the right is equally interesting. You can see an old cast desk and chair from a rural classroom of the twenties or thirties. I remember using these things and wondering what sort of madness designed, or failed to design such contraptions and issue it for sale in schools. Even more monstrous were the desk seat combinations that were mounted on two by fours with folding seats and wood hard as the cast iron frames.

The set of wooden wheels are from a wrack or wagon of the horse farming days with this being the front set of wheels.

At each auction sale we see people who specialise in identifying that which may be valued by others and they collect things often it is the old tractors and household items. One wonders if memories, a sense of the past and connections between time are somehow trapped in these old and worthless or invaluable things.
