Smoke On The Wind

FTLComm - Tisdale - April 29, 2000
Late Friday afternoon this was the scene looking East toward the Harvest Valley Pool terminal. The wind was nearly twenty knots from the South West so the smoke was blowing away from the town but the ominous flames and smoke seemed remarkably close to the community. It was a farmer burning flax straw near Carrot River on this past Sunday that kept Carrot River and Nipawin fire departments busy trying to save forest and sawmill.

This practice of torching stuble and straw is not only extremely dangerous but it has been identified as having a negative affect on the field's productivity. The practice continues for expedient cost cutting reasons even though farmer and non-farmer understand the improper nature of the activity.
