double
U.S. cities

We hear today that Regina has the highest rate of automobile theft in North America. Regina had 1,594 motor vehicle thefts per 100,000 people in 2000 and this rate is two to three times that of almost every major city in the United States, including Los Angeles, New York, Houston and Boston.

I find embarrassing that while Regina has had one of the highest juvenile crime rate in North America for sometime we have our leaders telling us that this automobile crime record is not a big deal as it is blamed on joyriding.

The police and insurance officials know that the problem could have begun in the mid-1990 with the notorious Oldsmobile Gang, yet nothing has been done in this regard. Here we have a very important social problem affecting the upbringing of our children and our future and we have Mr. Larry Fogg, President of the monopolist Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), telling us that the automobile theft problem is no problem if we keep the statistics in perspective. In fact, we understand that 96% of stolen vehicles are returned in Regina. Also, Mr. Fogg says that even though SGI paid $11.2-million for vehicles thefts in 2000 and half of this amount went to Regina we must realize that SGI paid $17-million for the damage caused by drivers hitting deer.

confusing

So while Saskatchewan and Regina are faced with the highest juvenile crime rate in North America, we have Mr. Fogg fogging our social problems with his insurance numbers. Looking forward to your next foggy numbers Mr. Fogg.
