The project superintendent is from Iowa and he spends a month here then gets home for some time with his family. This coming weekend he has hopes of making the journey back to Des Moines but the difficulties in the airline industry on both sides of the border are endangering his travel plans.

With pilots on strike in the US and Air Canada's pilots threatening to go out as they demand 9% wage increase in each of the next two years after years of wage role backs and layoffs the airline industry is recording very high profits.

The project will involve making the cement on site as you can see below left the cement trucks are here ready to work with the gravel and aggregate moving equipment. Some of the rebarb that will go into the construction is piled below awaiting being placed into the forms for pouring.

The new United Grain Growers facility will not result in the closure of the facility on the West side of Melfort as it will continue to serve its present function. icipate in the market place and with Pioneer, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Louis Dreyfus and Cargill all with large facilities in the Tisdale area
they have no choice but to have a competitive alternative to these other grain companies. As Cameron Hamilton pointed out "the days of the farmer pulling his grain up to the door are long gone, we have to go out there and get it."

This competition in the grain buying market is good for the farmer and in the long run develops efficiency and

high volume facilities like this one to improve the country's overall capability to handle and market its agricultural products. The only serious problem in this strategy remains the fragile nature of the road system. (for earlier reports on this project click here)
