The Greenwater Report for May 24, 2005

May 22nd, 2005: An incredibly gorgeous day - warm, sunny, and light winds. Earlier in the week the whole weekend was forecast to be like that, but yesterday turned out to be cool and, in the afternoon, wet. Lloyd and Louise and family (except Scott, who is still in China) came for the weekend and we had a great visit. Lloyd and Kevin went out fishing a couple of times; they caught two jacks yesterday, but released them both. This morning, all they got was a couple of nibbles.

I went for a walk down to the beach today; there were lots of people sunning, a few playing catch, and some kids playing in the sand by the shore, but nobody in the water. I remember when a dip on the Victoria Day weekend was almost compulsory, even if there was ice visible. I bided my time, though and finally some kids ventured out waist deep, so I caught a picture of them. (bottom of page)

There were kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats, fishing boats, and Personal Water Craft buzzing around, the PWC making the most noise, of course. Why is it the smaller the car, motorcycle or boat, the noisier? The same can be said for dogs too, sometimes.

Mosquitoes are out in force, tiny little things that still know how to bite. I guess they are a fact of life in this country; a little repellent won’t hurt us.

Millers had a yard sale yesterday, with several families participating. I went out in the morning and parking was a big problem. Everyone in the country showed up! Then they got rained out about noon, so set up again today.

I didn’t stay there long, though - Joyce Weber phoned from The Tackle Box to say that a thirteen-year-old girl had caught a three-foot jack. I dashed down with my camera and met Mary Lasby, of Regina, (right) and her beautiful fish of which she was justifiably proud. I took a couple of pictures, and promised to e-mail one to her. She said she was using a Red Five of Diamonds lure.

She was there with the Robert Switzers; I suspect as a friend of their daughter’s. In conversation, I learned that Robert is the son of Lawrence and Betty Switzer who were residents of Wynyard in the early sixties, and friends of ours. I’m glad to report that they are doing well, and recently celebrated their fiftieth anniversary.

We got a little over an inch of rain during the week, with warm temperatures. Half of the rain came yesterday. The trees popped like mad all week, progressing more than they had all spring. Yesterday, we stood by the Hall and watched the grass growing. Everything is a beautiful, soft green, ideal for the first long weekend of the summer. Unbelievable! Can you imagine the energy it takes to turn a whole forest green almost overnight?

Did you ever wonder if complaining really does any good? Well, as mentioned in earlier columns, there was some consternation around here about the brightness of the TV tower’s strobe lights at night, such as flashing right into people’s bedrooms and keeping them awake. There was some pretty serious complaining done and as a result the strobe was turned down to low power at night, and I’m told it is no longer a problem. Driving home the other night, we noticed that it is certainly very visible, but not hard on the eyes. Congratulations, people!

I haven’t got my glasses yet, and what bothers me most are car headlights at night. Not bad if only one vehicle, but if there’s much traffic I have to surrender the wheel to Doreen. Almost as bad as car lights, though, are those brightly reflecting highway signs, especially with a wet windshield, and it’s not just my eyes — Doreen complains about the same thing.

Do you remember me mentioning seeing a strangely colored fox at Bjorkdale? Well, Therese Pelletier called yesterday to say that it was sitting in her garden. She thought it was a coyote at first; it was a little bigger than most red foxes. I enquired of some of our local naturalists how common it is and if it was crossed with another type of fox. Aside from some vague references to cross foxes (crossed with what?) they didn’t supply any answers.
