The Cove

The Greenwater Report for August 7, 2007

Greenwater Lake Provincial Park , Tuesday, August 7, 2007

August 5th, 2007: Another long weekend with perfect weather. Are we lucking out this year, or what? A quarter inch of rain Saturday morning didn’t hurt either, in fact I suspect it was welcomed by all. That rain came complete with a sound track but not a violent one. Lovely sound! The Park has been very busy, of course. We used to think it dropped off drastically after the August long weekend, but maybe next weekend’s events will keep it going a bit longer.

Don’t forget – fireworks on the beach, courtesy of the Beach Café, on Saturday, August 11th. Also on that day is a daytime volleyball tournament on the beach. It is to be hoped the Park will have the volleyball court rebuilt by then. There will also be music, a sand castle contest and face painting. Last big bash before the Labour Day weekend.

Total rain in July was an eighth over one inch, according to our gauge. Not very much, but I guess hot and dry was what was wanted, and it was what we got. Some say a good rain would be welcome now as long as it doesn’t come with high winds and hail.

Those rumours you have been hearing about The Cove are true – at least, some of them are, some are distortions, and some are just plain false. I went over and met Darren Teale, one of four partners who have bought the Cove, and who will be the on-site manager. He is a very personable young man, originally from Tisdale and raised there and in Prince Albert. Most recently, he taught school in Japan for four years and while there he met and married his wife, Yoko. They have one son, James, fifteen months. If Yoko and James come out next weekend, I will try to get a family picture of them for the Report.

I also met Steve Flaman, another partner. It was Steve who flew in a couple of weeks ago in a float plane to look the place over. I didn’t get the names of the other two partners but one of them was the pilot of the plane.

The name of the place will be Greenwater Fisherman’s Cove. They haven’t set a firm opening date yet as there is an awful lot of work to be done, but they are hoping for September. First will be the store (well stocked) and the gas bar; then the accommodations, and finally the restaurant. No plans have been made yet for the mini-golf.

One very interesting twist – they are contemplating renting out cabins and rooms on a seasonal basis, almost like a condominium. People could have a home for the summer (or however long they want it) and The Cove could have a guaranteed income from that property without the hassle of maid service. Sounds like a plan!

Darren wants to get to know the other business people in the park, and find ways to work co-operatively with them. I believe he will be a welcome addition to the community. Maybe he can get the old Greenwater Tourism Association up and running again!

We saw our first bear of the year the other day – a cub, on the shoulder of the road, very still. Obviously a casualty. It sure looked cute and harmless. It was the first we had seen but others have reported seeing many, mostly along the highway south of here.

Two little spotted fawns have been frisking around our place. I haven’t been able to get a picture of them because they are shier than their elders. Their momma hasn’t been in evidence but I suspect she isn’t too far away in the bush.
