cold
snap

Cold weather from the 8th of February to the 27th; very warm from the 28th to the 20th of March, then very cold from the 21st of March. Looks like the cold snap might have broken; it was only -11 this morning (March 26th).

11.3
pounds

Do you remember me mentioning last January that Cody Yablonski of Clair caught a 21-pound jack in Greenwater? Well, it must run in the family. Chuck, at Fisherman's Cove, handed me a note last Monday: Ray Yablonski, Cody's Dad, caught one weighing 11.3 pounds.

Canada
geese

Last Monday, we spotted six Canada geese in a field just west of Porcupine Plain. I thought I had heard some on my walks, but hadn't seen any. I notice that last year on March 5th, I reported that Canada geese had been seen and heard, so this isn't early.

Oren
Jackson

Our condolences to Merle Jackson and family. Oren Jackson, a long-time Park employee, died last week. There was a memorial service in Porcupine Community Center on Wednesday.

shovel
time

A terribly high wind on the 19th, coupled with +7 temperatures, cut the snow down dramatically. There were lots of bare spots in the fields. The Park grooms a snowmobile trail along the boulevard by our place; as a result there is a buildup of several inches of packed snow. When the temperature gets well up above freezing, car wheels have a tendency to break through, so I have been putting in more shovel time than I have all winter. The way the trees were whipping around, we were expecting to lose our power, but it didn't happen. Before the Park got a chance to blade down the ruts, we got that cold snap, and now it is all icy ruts. I tried pushing one car out of our driveway and slipped, twisting my back, so will be hobbling around with a cane for the next few days.

mortality

George Renneberg and Merv Miller were talking about mortality the other day. George said he couldn't die; he had cloned himself and had a couple of clones at home. As soon as one body played out, it would be discarded and a clone would take its place. Merv thinks there should be a "w" in "clone".

Doghide
River
Festival

We went to Tisdale's Doghide River Festival on Saturday, and had a great time. Parkland Photography Club had a display, and its members were given the responsibility of making a photographic record of events. In addition, Doreen and I set up a display for Greenwater community. In past years, the displays were in the curling rink ˜ a nice big building that could accommodate everyone ˜ but with the most horrible lighting. This year, for some reason, the displays were scattered in a dozen classrooms. At first, it seemed like a bad idea, but as we wandered from room to room, checking out the various displays, we realized the lighting was far superior to the curling rink's, and it seemed easier to visit with the displayers. Events, of course, were held in the auditorium and the theatre. Judging from the comments I heard, this year's layout was by far the best.

Helen
Clarke

I asked Helen Clarke (Search for Elizabeth, Elizabeth and the City Girl) if she had another book out. She said yes, but it is still in the computer. Peggy Looby (Sunnybrow) told me once that she is working on another book, but I didn't see it on the Writers' Guild table, so it must still be in her computer, too. Ladies, I hope you have protected yourselves against crashes they have been known to cause people to resort to untypical language when months of work goes poof!

sound
systems

When will the people that run sound systems for musical events realize that it is just not necessary to blast the people at the back of the hall out of their seats? I sat in on the talent show on Saturday for awhile; the first performer, who did a great job on "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina", had a soft voice and came through just right. Two or three acts later, though, a girl came on with a strong voice, and no effort was made to tone down the electronics. As a result, what I suspected was quite a good voice came through harsh and garbled and thoroughly unpleasant. I hope the judges were able to see through the noise to the quality of the voice.
