This is the typical configuration of the modern high efficiency natural gas furnace. The exhaust from the unit is cool enough to be carried outside by a plastic pipe. Furnaces of this type consume far less fuel than older furnaces because their burner size is much smaller and they extract more heat from the consumed fuel.
