November 27th, 2001: Parkland Photography Club’s November meeting was held on the 27th, with eleven members present.

Four Merit Point Awards were made. Wes Swan received a Silver Medal; Jenny Fritshaw and Mary Wright each received a Gold, and Tibby Frazer received her Master’s keyfob. Congratulations! Merit points do not come easily. They are earned by participating in Club events as well as work in photography outside the Club, such as having photos published, and judging at fairs. Our Club is fortunate in having a very active membership.

Since we are unlikely to make use of the services that CAPA offers, it was decided to not renew our membership. PRPA offers enough in the way of competitions, etc. to keep us busy.

The theme for tonight’s meeting was “Touching”, and we had eight entries. First was Jenny Fritshaw’s photo of two small children touching noses. Runners-up were Tibby Frazer’s photo of two ladies in one oversized pair of blue jeans, Alie Neish’s photo of a cat nuzzling a kitten’s ear, and Mary Wright’s photo of five cats eating from one dish. The photo is taken from above; the cats’ heads are touching, and their bodies radiate out from the center.

Main event of the evening was the judging of PRPA’s Travelling Salon slides. There were fifty one entries; our judges were very close in their awards on most of them, with a wide divergence on only a few. Judging involved the whole group; most slides were discussed at some length, and the process took the rest of the evening.

We do not hold a meeting in December, but President Mary Wright challenged members to use their cameras. Each member is to bring your five best photos taken from now until the January meeting; select the best one of the five and enter it into a club competition at the January meeting. The other four will make a Club showcase, to be viewed and critiqued. Since we will have a showing of the Club’s current slide show, plus a critique, as well as our regular Theme shoot, it is going to be a busy meeting. Theme for the January meeting is “Happy”, which shouldn’t be too hard.

Anyone wishing to have prints copied onto slides should bring them to the January meeting; the charge is 75¢ per slide, and I like to do all at one time.

Any enlargements to be entered in PRPA’s print competitions should be done by then, plus we need a fresh set of prints for our Club display board. This display is set up continuously at Fairlight Studio & Gallery, so prints should be changed every two or three months.

I have been taken to task for not letting people know more about the workings of our Club. We have nine meetings a year, missing July, August and December; the June meeting takes the form of a field trip toward the end of the month; the other months, meetings are held on the last Tuesday at 7pm, at Fairlight Studio and Gallery in Tisdale. Interested people are invited to a free meeting to see if they like what we do; if they decide to join, dues are $25 per year for individuals, or $35 per year for husband and wife. Members take turns bringing a lunch to meetings, and receive a monthly newsletter including the theme photos from the last meeting. At present, we have twelve members; that can vary from a low of eight, to a high of fifteen. Meetings are long on photography and short on business. We have fun!
