Parkland Photography Club - October, 2001

Tisdale - Noivember 2, 2001 - by: Gerald Crawford

The October meeting of Parkland Photography Club was well attended, with only two members absent on account of illness. The meeting date had been moved back to October 31st to accommodate some other members.

Wes Swan gave us a rundown on the projected PRPA Outing, to be held at Greenwater Park on June 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, 2002. There will be lots of opportunity to socialize, of course, plus workshops in topics such as Macro Photography, Digital Photography, Wildlife & Nature, and Outdoor Portraits. There will be indoor demonstrations on topics like mat-cutting, photo marking, and digital manipulation, as well as a workshop on Judging. Our Club will be expected to participate by doing some of the leg-work, finding places to photograph, and looking after the Outing Print Competition.

Darlene covered correspondence, and outlined points awarded for member activities over the summer. She has enough slides for the Club’s slide show, and a showing will be put on at several seniors’ homes, etc. during the winter. It will be available for showing in communities other than Tisdale by the end of January, and members are encouraged to use it.

Darlene had entered a contest put on by Saskatchewan Naturally Magazine, and won Third Prize, which is a pair of Nikon binoculars. She sent two or three entries, and didn’t know which one won. The theme of the competition was “My Saskatchewan Vacation”. Congratulations, Darlene!

Harry Bourne

There were six entries into our Theme competition. The theme was “River” and all entries were excellent photos. Tibby Frazer won First Place for her photo of a metal bridge over river rapids, with interesting stone formations in the foreground. Runners-up were Harry Bourne’s photo of a river meandering through bushland, in the early morning light, Darlene McCullough’s photo of a wide river with houseboats moored in the foreground, and Jenny Fritshaw’s photo of a speedboat racing along a wide river. In every case, the technical quality was excellent.

Glen Neish showed us a photo he had taken of Northern Lights; it was an excellent photo, and he said it was taken hand-held on 200 film. Right in the center of the photo were concentric rings looking as if a pebble had been dropped in a pool of water. He said he had a skylight filter on the camera. Could these be Newton Rings?

For the November meeting we will judge PRPA’s Travelling Slide Salon; this is expected to use up our available time, but if the Salon is not ready for judging for any reason, we will review the Club’s Slide Show.

After a delicious lunch provided by Tibby Frazer, we adjourned to Timothy Shire’s house, where Tim demonstrated some digital photo techniques. These ran from a discussion of the make-up of a digital photo, to buying and using a digital camera, to manipulating digital images in a computer. Even those members who do not have a computer, and do net expect to get one, found the demonstration interesting. Now they know how some of those interesting magazine covers and ads are made!

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 27th, 7 PM, at Fairlight Studio & Gallery, Tisdale.
