Round 4, Bantam "AA" Ties Kindersley

FTLComm - Tisdale - March 7, 2001

We are nearing the end of the play-offs as teams are working their way through both league and provincial playoffs. The "AA" Bantam team has triumphed over Melfort, North Battleford, Warman and now have begun their home and home series with Kindersley. During the season's league play these two teams had played each other twice. Here in Tisdale the first game resulted in a tie and their game in Kindersley saw the Ramblers spend the game in penalty box and suffer a serious defeat.

Though there were a lot of fans on hand at the start of the game most were parents but before long the stands were almost full and they were rewarded with a close game.

But there were more than fans our to see tonight's game. The competition at every level of hockey for talent has turned what we all take for a game into a serious business. Though scouts have their eyes on up and coming players as early as atom age the real selection and signing goes on at the bantam level and there were at least five scouts attending this Tuesday night provincial playoff game. The man in this picture on the extreme right is with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He told this reported he was looking at several Kindersley players, Jesse Fischer, Casey Lee and Darren Lefebvre were among the players he said had excellent potential.

Having ridden on a bus since noon the Kindersley Bears seemed pretty slow on their feet in the first two periods of play. But they are persistent and kept the puck in the Ramblers end for the first three minutes of play. This picture shows the point shot that was deflected into the goal as Ramblers moved ahead to lead the game 1 to nothing. The Tisdale Ramblers are a highly mobile team and this was in quite a contrast to the zone play of the Kindersley Bears who like to get into a position and play a very controlled situational hockey style.

There were on three penalties
in the game with the Ramblers picking up the first one and in fifteen seconds Kindersley capitalised on the penalty and made it a tied game.

The second period was a somewhat lack luster grind that saw no scoring until near the end of the period where Kindersley chalked up another goal each.

The third period saw Kindersley come out of the dressing room with a little
intensity and a considerably higher level of mobility The third period was excellent end to end hockey as both teams played well. Especially impressive was Tisdale's goalie Mark Kehrig who was able to fend off almost twice as many shots on net than his opponent But as the period drew to a close Kindersley's spirited play had given them a lead of one. With less than a minute to play Tisdale was taking the play to Kindersley as they were a man short from a hooking penalty.

It was in this juncture in the game that the FTLComm video camera's battery showed that had enough and as a battery switch was being made the camera overbalanced on the tripod mount, the shoe released and the camera descended to concrete. Alas this was when Tisdale made it a tied game and the video tape of the game ($15 from FTLComm) does not have the last fifty seconds of play.

Tisdale has some very exciting hockey players in this bantam team. Captain Myles Zimmer is a major threat on the ice and extremely effective in front of the net. Ryan Blatchford from Kelvington is remarkably nimble and his great puck handling and heads up play make him a joy to watch. The second period, that was rather dull, had one bright spot and that was Gavin Mievre who got his line into full action while centre Cody Purves won almost every face off he was in. Defenseman Jesse Youzwa, Brenon Young from Weekes and Brandan Kushniruk all made their presence known.

The stand outs for Kindersley in the Tuesday night game were Jesse Fischer and Steven Gillen while goalie Devan MacKeracher is a solid stand up goalie who sticks to his position and does not give up much goal space. The Bear's performance in their own end is impressive as they play a very rigid structured play tying up the opposition when ever possible.

So Friday night Tisdale faces Kindersley on their home ice with a neutral Saskatoon referee to supervise the game and both teams are starting out even.
