Hoar-frost

So much of what we enjoy in life seems to come from what we learned as children and for me that was so often the things that brought jooy and pleasure to my mother. She was positively enchanted when the fog would come in winter and the hoar-frost would form on the twigs, branches and wires. This joy and wonder has been with me all of my life as I consider the wonder of frost almost magical.

As a young and perhaps difficult young teenager I discovered that if you were able to plant a solid boot about five to six feet off the ground on a power pole you could set up a resonating vibration to the wires above and when they were covered with hoar-frost one could fill the air with ice crystals.

It was not until after eleven that I was able to get out of the house this morning and capture some images of the frost. By then the fog that had visited during the early morning had returned and the town was deeply covered with the thick air. The last two pictures were taken at 4:20 or so this afternoon and by then the fog had moved away and instead a strato-cumulus castolanos layer was in place awaiting the sun to set.
