Can Am Bowl X

FTLComm - Kelliher - Friday, September 22, 2006

For Kelliher and many other parts of Saskatchewan six man football is the definitive game and we in Tisdale had a shot at it back in 1999 but other communities around the province have kept the game alive and triving so much so that for many communities it is the premier high school sport. A small high school can more easily put a good six man team on a field than a small community can put together a competitive hockey team.

Kelliher has had extreme success with the sport and the images in the video and in the still show that it has an exceptional field for the game and they have distinguished themselves in provincial competition each and every year. But away back, ten years ago in 1996 they were able to organise a summer bowl game between an American team and themselves. That's how traditions are established and in the United States in the flat lands of North Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and their neighbours the six man game is the staple of s mall american communities.

Ten years is a long time to be able to organise a project like this one and Saskatchewan's six man football communities deserve a considerable amount of credit for continuing to put teams on the field and celebrate each season with the annual CanAm Bowl game. This year it was in Kelliher and next year it will be somewhere in the States when it will be four downs and a narrow field.

The hour and a half long video of this year's game is available from its producer and director Amy Derkach of Ituna and you would like a copy of the DVD give her a call at 306 795-2955 or send her e-mail.

Below is a list of all the people and their communities who made up this year's committee and the rosters and their home towns of the players who competed in the exceptional game played on July 8th in Kelliher.
