Ken Jones from Regina was out to Craven and has this year's crocus crop for us to enjoy.

From the very beginning of this web site in May of 1998 there has been a concerted effort to retain each story, each picture and the essence of the site as it is in itself a sort of history not only of the topics dealt with but of the Internet itself. Through the years the styles have changed, the quality of the images have changed as more and more readers of the site were able to access the site using high speed.
This problem of high speed Internet has not been solved as most rural users are still caught in the realm of dial up and so many of the modern features of the web experience are so dependent upon download speed this and other web sites are simpoly not functional on a dial up connection. For some time we used quite a bit of video and even on high speed that was a deterent to the casual visitor.
The purpose of this page is to clean up the front page of Ensign by moving the archival and historic material to be accessed from here rather than from the front page. It is to be hoped that this will speed up loading the front page.

Weather |
As a Saskatchewan web site it would be unseemly not to pay special attention to one of the most important factors in the lives of every person who lives out here under an endless sky and vunerable to to even the slightest change in environment. The weather is noted at the top of each front page each day the site is posted but through the years each weather observation has been logged and you can go back in time and check out the weather for the specific time of posting through the years. The check this out just select a month below then scroll through the days and dates to see what it was like.

The Front Page |
The process of saving the front page did not begin immediately but in September 0f 2002 and since then each day's front page with all of its links and pictures have been saved and are on its own page. Through the years only a few stories have lost their way, some have been withdrawn because the author wanted them to disappear and others for reasons of their own. However, for the most part only a few stories have been lost over the years including a few to technical problems with server changes. In its time Ensign has resided on about eight different servers in Winnipeg and Regina.

Stories Day by Day |
The simplest and most direct method of finding a story, a person or an event is by using the Google search tool at the top of this page and on the top of the front page. But, long before that tool was available a cumbersome day by day record was established and has been maintained. Up until now this day by day record was accessed using the calendars listed along the right hand side of the page. One of these for the most recent weeks and the other listing months in the previous years. We have no way of knowing but suspect that few people ever take the time to browse through these pages but they do exist and as of now (July 20th 2009) we are moving the calendars from the front page to this archive page.
The highlighted dates indicate the days that Ensign posted and when you click on them you will bring up a page for that week of stories with the lead to the story and the lead picture.
One of the reasons for this form of archive is to give the reader a general view of what was going on, or at least what caught the attention of the story writers for that period of time.

The find of the Day and Tim's Tips |
These two rather incidental daily features remain on the front page but it is important to point out that they have been preserved for the whole idea of postarity. Each Day Kevin McIntyre and others in perusal of the Internet come across stories that seem to capture the imagination of the day. When Kevin is unable to carry out this process a story is selected sometimes from other contributors and the story or site noted is the recorded on an archival page. The cool thing about this is that when this page is viewed some time in the future it gives a sort of snap shot of what caught our attention and in many cases documents the times we live in. Click here to visit the Find of the Day.
Tim's Tips are basically a comment by the editor of Ensign on something that seems worth noting. Unfortunately they have not been continuous the feature was added and dropped several times in the history of Ensign but each one has been preserved and now they come with a full size picture. Bottom of the page Picture of the Day |
|
It was not long after Ensign began posting that the picture of the day evolved and it has been around ever since changing in size and now with an embedded caption. Over the years many people have contributed to these feature images and taken as a whole they present an interesting picture history of this web site and the times in which it exists.
Every few month's the archive is updated to include the past month's pictures. By clicking on the dates below you can access these remarkable pages which in turns allows you to access the full size image as it appear on the date of posting.
